We eliminate ContentDotNet and Xuar from Codeplex

After an simple existence in Codeplex, we eliminated the project ContentDotNet, once its support is already left.

There they are left the 1,139 downloadings of the last version (Content.NET 0.9.3) from the 23/01/2007.

Also we eliminate Xuar Alpha 0.3 with 369 downloadings from 23/06/2007.

Since there are some bureaucratic proceedings, we will take some days in erasing them definitively.

End of support of Content.NET

At the end of the month of August of 2009 we will finish the support of the Content.NET portal.

The project Xuar, its successor, has also been stopped.

Is the Xuar project stooped?

Although in the last months there were not too much modifications in the Xuar sources and the Xuar Live pages are not working better, the project is not left.

The cause was the annual vacations and the work in alternative projects less complex than Xuar than allows to learn the new ASP.NET 2.0 characteristics with a better yield in the learning that if they were made directly on Xuar.
We hope that soon we can see many good updates in Xuar.

Week 31 with Xuar

After 10 days of holidays, and many time used in change of hoster and in a new ASP.NET 2.0 application, we added:

use of Atlas in many webparts.
use the new version of Webpartcomponents (Nsquared2)

We are working (another time) in:

To refresh the sitemap when the language changes
To make a webpart with CRUD of the information of the users
To solve diverse problems of the GridView working with webparts. The problems are with Webpartcomponents (Nsquared2) when I add a webChrome definition file.
To document the diverse components that are integrated with Xuar.
To create a new webpart module: a image gallery. This module works yet in standalone web applications.

Implant Atlas. It is possible to be seen in the administration page, how when selecting different pages to see them in detail, they do not recharge the complete page. We use the control Atlas UpdatePanel.

Xuar needs VS2005 Web Application Project Model

The Visual Studio 2005 Web Application Project Model is a new web project option for Visual Studio 2005 that provides the same conceptual web project approach as VS 2003 (a project file based structure where all code in the project is compiled into a single assembly) but with all the new features of VS 2005 (refactoring, class diagrams, test development, generics, etc) and ASP.NET 2.0 (master pages, data controls, membership/login, role management, Web Parts, personalization, site navigation, themes, etc).

Another problem with the install kit 0.9.3

In the 0.9.3 release of Content.NET in 05/24/2006 we lost many Stored Procedures.

You can get errors if you update the portal info or you add a new page.

Now the install kit has this SPs, but if you do not want download this another time you can add this SPs executing this database scripts by QueryAnalizer or other ways.

Google Adwords

Thanks to a gift of our hoster we have begun a small campaign of publicity for our Content.NET portal with Google Adwords and in a period of about 25 days we have obtained 15,000 visualizations (2/3 Spanish) with 100 visits.

Weeks 14 to 19 with Xuar

In these weeks (practically a month) we have done:

To work much in diverse subjects, without advancing too much.
To update to the new version the "Visual Studio 2005 Web Application Project Model".
To localizate a good part of the content of the portal.
To add 2 more webparts: RSS and HtmlFeed.
To put own content of Xuar in the example data.
To upload an example of Xuar to the URL: ~~http://cdn2-1.at.vwdhosting.net/~~
To upload to Xuar 's workspace for download the releases 0.9.3 (Production) and 0.9.5 (Beta) of Content.NET.

Install does not create all tables

If you find that the first execution of the app does not show the first page and you take a look at the database and you find that you have only a few tables, you can read the .LOG files at the database folder to see that errors occurs in the install of the database.

If you see that there are problems with the COLLATE xxxx, you can replace all the Spanish COLLATE sequences for anything (or for your database COLLATE sequence) in all the .SQL files. You can delete the data base, create it empty and launch another time the app.

Content.NET 0.9.5 works with VS2005 and ASP.NET 2.0

Thanks to use of "Visual Studio 2005 Web Application Project Preview" that allows to develop in way project the applications Web in VS2005 (that was what VS2003 did), we have made with a little effort a new version of our Content.NET portal that works with VS2005 and ASP.NET 2.0.

The application does not incorporate any of the new features of ASP.NET 2.0 and VS2005 but it works and it can be compiled and be maintained with the new version of Visual Studio.

The application follows with the same scheme that previously. The part of the portal core is an application Web and the rest (all the modules base, of administration and third parts) is local projects.

So that to the project of the portal core can work, it is precise to unload the utility previously mentioned.
Now the conversion already is finished, but it is necessary to verify that the install-kit works before making available its unloading.

Content.NET 0.9.3 does not? work with VS2005

With the utility Visual Studio 2005 Web Application Project Preview that allows to work in the development of applications Web like projects (just like it made VS2003) the previous situation it has changed. We are working in the version Content.NET 0.9.5 that would work with VS2005, but without taking advantage of the new characteristics of ASP.NET 2.0, but that would allow its maintenance to the people who work with VS2005 and not with VS2003.

The application already is prepared in which it is the portal core, but their numerous modules cause that this work still takes something of time.

I continue having problems to upload the sources to GotDotNet.
I cannot use none of the three systems possible to manage the sources (I would like to use the system integrated with VS2005), non-receipt solution to my requirements of support and non-encounter documentation some on this subject.
I return to think about putting the project in SourceForge.
I use to document to the sources the following utilities:

GhostDoc, that tries to obtain a simple documentation in the own source of the program without keying in nothing, based on the own syntax of the functions and properties.
Ndoc that generates the documentation from XML files (would have to be created by VS from the documentation included in the source) and Reflection.

At the moment I can't include in the help file the documentation from the source.
I did not included any more information in the project.
The application that will be working this month is a compiled version of Xuar.

We are working to create the Default page by code, adding the webparts by code reading the page contents from data.

And we did:

It is already the Default page mounted (the modules that compose it) totally by code.
All the pages that are called from the menu, already are really the same Default page. They lack the pages that are called from other pages.
They are loaded by code as much the true Webparts as the generic ones (controls ASCX placed in WebPartZones).

Xuar is moving

Xuar is more beautiful now

There is a new version of Xuar at ~~http://hiony33-1.at.vwdhosting.net/~~.

The update responds to the graphical personalization: use of master pages, themes, style sheets, skins and Chromes for webparts.

We have created a webpart that is a skin selector (including all the scheme of design: master pages, themes, skins, chrome) and that allows to choose between 4 different themes or skins:

Default
Granite
Paper
Sand.

First one has a different scheme and the others play with the style sheets to differentiate the aspect, starting off of a very similar master page.

Still we must work in the graphical aspect of these skins, that have been created from the Corporate of Microsoft.

Problems using with VWDE databases created by ASP.NET 2.0 Beta 2

I am trying copy the actual app I am testing webparts with it, and I get this error:

The 'System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebParts.SqlPersonalizationProvider' requires a database schema compatible with schema version '1'. However, the current database schema is not compatible with this version. You may need to either install a compatible schema with aspnet_regsql.exe (available in the framework installation directory), or upgrade the provider to a newer version.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.Configuration.Provider.ProviderException: The 'System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebParts.SqlPersonalizationProvider' requires a database schema compatible with schema version '1'. However, the current database schema is not compatible with this version. You can try this:

Testing Webparts

We can use some parts of this framework to show the portal modules and to bring them many characteristics used by the module system... And also many new characteristics of webparts, as the portal personalization by the user.
We are testing the use of webparts to eliminate the bigger part of the portal code managing this functionality.
Also to use the most best practices and new characteristics of ASP.NET 2.0.

Master pages, themes and skins

The new version of our portal Content.NET will use the news characteristics of ASP.NET 2.0 for the personalization of the appearance: the master pages, the themes and skins.

Master Pages - The Master Pages feature provides the ability to define common structure and interface elements for your site, such as a page header, footer, or navigation bar, in a common location called a "master page", to be shared by many pages in your site. This improves the maintainability of your site and avoids unnecessary duplication of code for shared site structure or behavior.

Themes and Skins - The Themes and Skins feature of ASP.NET 2.0 allows you to factor style and layout information into a separate group of files, collectively called a Theme. A Theme can then be applied to any site to affect the look and feel of pages and controls within the site. Style changes to a site can then be easily maintained by making changes to the Theme, without having to edit the individual pages in your site. Themes can also be shared with other developers.

Bulk Copy Operations in ADO.NET 2.0

Bulk copying of data from one data source to another data source is a new feature added to ADO.NET 2.0. Bulk copy classes provides the fastest way to transfer set of data from once source to the other.

I think we will choose not use Esperantus because the new location features in ASP.NET 2.0.

I look only a bit this new characteristics, but I think Microsoft copied Esperantus. And I think it is easy to localize apps.

I prefer put the localized text in the resources file, and I did not think about the possibility of enhance the resource provider.

What is Xuar?

Xuar is the codename for the next release of Content.NET portal working with .NET Framework 2.0, VS2005 y ASP.NET 2.0.

We want to use in Xuar the new characteristics of ASP.NET 2.0: master pages, providers, new controls, etc. to make of Content.NET Portal the best application CMS multilanguage.

The first step is compile the portal core code with ASP.NET 2.0.

Install problem: a lot of errors executing the create database script the first time

After the install, the first time that you launch the Content.NET app (with "http://localhost/contentdotnet", by example) you must to see the first page of the portal, after many minutes. This first time the app creates the database tables and SP executing a script 0.9.0.sql.

If you do not get the first default page, you must to see at the \database carpet and read the 0.9.0.log file. If there is a lot of errors a possible cause can be that you database or database server are working as case sensitive and many SP can be erroneous because they use many field names not case equal as they were created, and finally the app content.NET can't work.

Please, test that your data base is working as not case sensitive before execute the app first time.

The existing possibility of the Announcements and TextHTML modules of being able to perform an automatic translation has been deleted and this capability has gone to portal level. The default value is now disabled. This is because the Babelfish translation service is back in service. The base Modules that has the possibility of automatic translation (if has been set in the portal) are at the moment Announcements and TextHTML.
TextHTML module.- Corrected a problem (it created the content in the culture of the registered user) when the portal has only one language and the registered user has selected a favorite language other than the portal language.
TextHTML module.- Corrected a problem (we gave an error instead of display a message that the user does not have right to modify the text) when attempting to modify content but the session times out.
IFrame module.- Corrected the problem of which when there is no information in the default culture it does not take the default language.
SiteMap module.- Localized.
SiteMap module.- It takes the page names from the current culture.
SiteMap module.- Changed so that it gets the page name from the portal and not the one of the domain. This gave problems working with subportals.
Users on line module.- Corrected the problem that happened when the last user appeared with a link that gave an error if the user of the portal was not authenticated.
Module Settings.- Corrected a problem (we gave an error instead of display a message that the user does not have right to modify the text) when attempting to modify content but the session times out.
New Flags.- I added Cuban and Serbia and Montenegro flags. Also changed the Flag function in the database, so that we can display the Serbia and Montenegro flag.

Content.NET Team Portal is a portal dedicated to manage the Content.NET Portal Team, although it has some accessible sections to non registered users, and it admits registered users to download the Content.NET install kit.
